Confession time. I really love the idea of making as much as possible from scratch. Not only do I know exactly what is in something, but 99.9% of the time, the homemade version contains significantly less processed ingredients (and usually none at all). From body lotions and scrubs to spiced hot chocolate and brownie bites, I’ve been working on transforming the convenience of packages for homemade versions. The truth is, the from-scratch versions of these things take literally minutes to make and are infinitely cheaper, not to mention healthier and the fact that you will not have to deal with ingredients that don’t seem to belong, things like polyglycerol esters of fatty acids (yacks!), partially hydrogenated soybean oil (Euww!!!), cellulose gum, and modified cornstarch. If healthfulness is a big factor in your food consumption, this might be a winning argument for you for homemade over boxed mix.. In my quest to make things from scratch, I found that one of the biggest obstacles that people have, in general, is mimic certain features found in boxed mixes, such as “is so moist, melts in your mouth fantastic … “and claim that it works wonders. Well, let me tell you: the preparation time is almost always the same, and it is difficult to argue that one is more convenient than the other, if we rely only on the time we will spend preparing the ingredients that we need. At the end of the day, homemade things just taste better. In addition to using your own recipes, this would make a great gift for the holidays. Maybe a basket of some homemade cocoa mix, homemade vanilla fruit tart, and other goodies. And of course, don’t limit yourself just to food. Make your house look even more beautiful. Use and reuse everything you think it can help to make that project possible (glass bottles, jars, books & cute boxes, for example). Also, you will be helping to save our beautiful planet.
